Sweet's Story

I decided to write from Sweet's perspective and talk a little bit about her possible backstory and her interactions with Milkman.

There's a strange northerner in town. I've heard the girls talking about it, got in a fight with the guys at Mr. Soloman's store first thing in. I hope he'll come see me soon, I've never met a northerner before. Been doing this work a long time, long long time. I did it, my mama did it, my grandmama too. The people here are nice enough, the men love me. Their wives, not so much. One of the girls stopped by and said that northerner man is looking for a place to stay, they said Milkman was his name. Strange name for a strange man I guess.

Milkman came over today, like I hoped he would. He was nice, real nice. Even bathed me, he washed my hair and massaged my neck. He even washed dishes and scoured my tub. I didn't want to see him go. I aint never had a man treat me that nice before, guys round here just give me the money and leave. There's something different about this man, I hope he comes back soon.

That Milkman fellow came back again. Dragged me in the lake with him, saying something about a flying man. He's gone crazy I tell ya. This town has changed him, I don't see that quiet guy I saw the first night. He's gonna leave soon, I can tell. It hurts my heart to see him go, but it was fun while it lasted.

  1. I really liked your interpretation of Sweet's backstory. The colloquialisms and manners seem to coincide with Sweet's nature and personality. Plus, this does seem like something Sweet would think of when she met Milkman and hung out with him.

  2. woah, this was a rlly cool take on a kinda forgotten (?) character. I feel like much of the time in SoS Sweet's kinda a supporting character that exists only for Milkman's own development it seems, but I really like how in the end you showed how Sweet does in fact have emotions of her own (surprise!) and that Milkman's actions also have an impact on her

  3. I also did my blog on Sweet's view of Milkman, so I really liked reading yours and seeing the similarities/differences. Milkman and Sweet have a underrated connection so I'm happy to see someone else also noticed it.
